Begich Applauds Supreme Court Ruling on Gun Ownership

High court strikes down D.C. ban on handguns

U.S. Senate candidate Mark Begich today said he agrees with the U.S. Supreme Court's decision to strike down the District of Columbia 's 32-year-old ban on handguns. In a 5-4 decision announced this morning, the Court said the ban was incompatible with gun rights guaranteed under the Second Amendment.

"The Court today affirmed what Alaskans already know," Begich said. "Responsible gun ownership is a fundamental right guaranteed by our Constitution and no government can take that right away."

Today's ruling is the first major pronouncement on gun rights from the Supreme Court in U.S. history.

"While this decision is a major victory for our country and the Constitution, we have to continue to be vigilant. As Senator, I will continue to fight to protect the rights of law-abiding gun owners," Begich said.
