MIA team searches Alaska WWII battlefield

ANCHORAGE, Alaska -- A team of U.S. and Japanese experts has traveled to a remote island in Alaska to look for the remains of Japanese troops killed during World War II.

The MIA team will be scouring rugged Attu Island in the Aleutians where an estimated 2,300 Japanese soldiers and about 540 Americans were killed when U.S. forces recaptured the island in 1943.

The Defense Department said in a written statement that the team would use ground-penetrating radar to locate remains and also to avoid buried unexploded bombs.

The team will be working on Attu Island for two weeks. A similar mission was held over four days last year.
