Republicans now realize Iraq is another Bush failure

July 9, 2007

Washington, DC - The ranking Republican on the Homeland Security committee said on Sunday that the support for President Bush's plan for Iraq continues to erode because the progress he promised has not materialized and the "surge" of more troops has been a total failure.

The ranking Republican on the Homeland Security committee said on Sunday that the support for President Bush's plan for Iraq continues to erode because the progress he promised has not materialized and the surge of more troops has been a total failure.

"The president argued that we needed to undertake the surge in order to give the Iraq government the time, the space to pursue the political reforms," Sen. Susan Collins of Maine, ranking Republican on the Homeland Security committee, told CNN's "American Morning."

"That hasn't happened. Instead it has been our troops who are making the sacrifice, who are bearing the burden, and that's why you see a real change in support for the Iraq strategy."

Collins joins six other leading GOP senators in the last week that have spoken out about Iraq's civil war.
