Pelosi says Bush only one against child health care

October 18, 2007

Washington, DC - Nancy Pelosi said that President Bush is the only one against expanding the state-run Children's Health Insurance Program, even Republicans are against him.

Nancy Pelosi says that President Bush is the only one against expanding the state-run Children's Health Insurance Program, even Republicans are against him.

The House of Representatives is scheduled to vote Thursday on whether to override Bush's Oct. 3 veto of the proposed $35 billion, five-year expansion. Despite the support of 45 Republicans, the legislation initially fell about two dozen votes short of the two-thirds majority needed to pass without the president's signature.

Though Democrats have pounded Republicans over the issue for two weeks, House GOP leaders predict they will have the votes needed to uphold Bush's veto. But House Speaker Pelosi told reporters Wednesday, "We are still in this fight."

"The president is alone, and he's dragging some of his House members with him down this path," the California Democrat told reporters Wednesday. "At the end of the day, 10 million children will have health insurance in this country."
