Opposition leader Arthur Mutambara was arrested Sunday by President Robert Mugabe on charges charges of contempt of court and publishing falsehoods.

Mutambara is well known for his criticism of the corrupt Mugabe government and its handling of the March 29 presidential election.

Police in Harare surrounded the house of student activist-turned-opposition politician Mutambara around 10 a.m. and arrested him.

Mutambara is president of an MDC faction that split from the main party headed by Morgan Tsvangirai.

The charges stem from an opinion piece written by Mutambara in which he criticized President Robert Mugabe for the way the elections were handled. Raphael Khumalo, chief executive of The Sunday Standard, was arrested on charges of publishing falsehoods.

His arrest comes less than a month before Zimbabwe's June 27 presidential runoff in which Tsvangirai hopes to unseat Mugabe. Since the March balloting, there have been numerous reports from Tsvangirai's party and church groups about kidnappings, torture and other violence.
