Luciano Pavarotti has died of pancreatic cancer, his manager told The Associated Press. He was 71

Pavarotti lost consciousness and was suffering from kidney problems at the Modena home where he has been recovering following a hospital stay.

"The Maestro fought a long, tough battle against the pancreatic cancer which eventually took his life. In fitting with the approach that characterised his life and work, he remained positive until finally succumbing to the last stages of his illness," a statement released by his manager said.

The singer, who was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer last year, died at his home in the northern city of Modena, at the age of 71.

He had been admitted to hospital in Modena on August 8th with a fever. He was released two weeks later following diagnostic tests.

Pavarotti had cancer surgery in July 2006 in New York, and had not made any public appearances since then.
