Alex Rodriguez has bailed out of his 10-year, $252 million deal with the New York Yankees.

Rodriguez passes up the remaining $72 million of guaranteed money from the Yankees.

NEW YORK -- Alex Rodriguez has decided to opt out of his 10-year, $252 million deal with the New York Yankees, it was reported Sunday.

Fox TV reported during Sunday's night's World Series Game 4 that Rodriguez's agent, Scott Boras, announced his client's decision. Fox said Rodriguez was not content with the direction of the Yankees roster.

By opting out of his contract, Rodriguez passes up the remaining $72 million of guaranteed money from the Yankees. In return he will become a free agent, with the opportunity perhaps to strike an even richer deal elsewhere.

The Yankees have said they would not pursue Rodriguez if he goes for free agency.

Rodriguez -- who is a favorite to win his second American League MVP award as a Yankee -- hit .314 this season, with 54 home runs and 156 RBI.
