The FBI staked out New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer at a Washington hotel weeks before his alleged meeting with a prostitute that now threatens his career. The agency reportedly tailed Spitzer to the Renaissance Mayflower Hotel in January in an effort to catch him in the same suspected activity, a source told The Washington Post. Spitzer spent Tuesday with his family and met with a few aides, weighing whether to resign or face a possible impeachment proceeding. He publicly apologized Monday. Spitzer, a Democratic first-term governor, is allegedly a person identified in court papers as the anonymous "Client 9" who paid for a prostitute to travel from New York to Washington Feb. 13 to meet him at the hotel later identified as the Mayflower. The court papers, including details of wiretapped conversations, suggested Spitzer was a regular client of the Emperors Club VIP, an escort service. North Fork Bank's notification to the U.S. Treasury Department's financial crimes network about suspicious activity in one of Spitzer's personal accounts triggered the investigation, another source told the Post. The bank's report was triggered by Spitzer's attempt to structure a $10,000 cash transaction into three parts. |
