FARNBOROUGH, England -- A private jet crashed into a house in southern England Sunday, killing the five people on board, including two well-known motor-racing figures. No one on the ground in Farnborough, Kent, was killed. The victims included David Leslie, a former race car driver, and Richard Leslie, a sports car team chief, The Times of London reported. They were flying to southern France to test a Jaguar. Pat Harman returned from a vacation in Madeira to find her home had been demolished. Her husband, Edwin, was golfing in Portugal. The aircraft had just taken off when the pilots reported trouble, The Daily Telegraph reported. A Biggin Hill Airport spokesman said they issued a mayday and said they would attempt an emergency landing. Jason Murrell, who lives nearby, said the plane was so low he could see the passengers' eyes. "The pilot was struggling to bank away from our house and a terrified woman was staring straight at me," Murrell said. "I will never forget that sight. The plane banked to the right and it followed a line of houses towards some woods. The pilot was trying to clear the estate -- he was a real hero." The pilot of another plane told the Telegraph he heard the ill-fated aircraft's pilots report engine vibrations. |
