Big Brown whips the Derby field

Big Brown, starting from the outside post, won the 134th running of the Kentucky Derby Saturday at Churchill Downs.

Big Brown made the Kentucky Derby following his wire-to-wire win in the Florida Derby at Gulfstream Park. The 3-year-old is undefeated in four career starts.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- Big Brown, making just his fourth career start, won the 134th running of the Kentucky Derby Saturday at Churchill Downs.

He was the first horse since 1926 to win from the 20th position and also was one of only seven undefeated horses to win in the long history of the race.

Big Brown, starting from the outside post, made his move just past the three-quarters marker and took the lead over Bob Black Jack. The time of the race was 2 minutes 1 and 4/5ths seconds.

Eight Belles, the lone filly in the race, was second, but was hurt and was down on the track shortly after the race. Denis of Cork was third.

Onsite veterinarian Larry Bramlage said Eight Belles broke both front ankles and was immediately euthanized after the race.

Jockey Kent Desormeaux, riding Big Brown, captured his third Kentucky Derby. He won with Real Quiet in 1998 and with Fusaichi Pegasus in 2000.
