PrintThe call is out for seafood workers all over Alaska

More than 1000 workers are needed by seafood companies this summer throughout coastal Alaska. Laurie Fuglvog is an employment security sepcialist with the Alaska Atate Dept. of Labor in Juneau.

"Right now we're looking for a lot of people to work in Naknek for the Bristol Bay salmon fishery. That will start in mid-June and last for about a month. Ocean Beauty, North Pacific, Yardarm Knot, and Leader Creek need about 250 workers for Naknek.

When the big run at Bristol Bay is over, the traveling work force program will set you up with jobs in other regions.

"Right now we have job orders in Petersburg for work that starts in July. We've got openings in Seward and Cordova, Kenai, Kodiak, Sitka - a lot of openings coming up."

Fuglvog says the seafood processing jobs are ideal for young people heading off to college.

"They offer a chance to see other parts of Alaska. In remote areas if you're 18 and you can stay in the bunk house will offer round trip transportation and room and board if you complete the season.

There's an opportunity to work overtime when there's a lot of fish, and you can save a lot of money, and there's nowhere to spend it."
