Atlanta, GA - James Brown, the legendary "Godfather of Soul," died early this morning of pneumonia in an Atlanta hospital. He was 73.

James Brown, the legendary Godfather of Soul, died early this morning of pneumonia in an Atlanta hospital.

Brown was admitted to Emory Crawford Long Hospital on Sunday and died around 1:45 a.m. Monday.

Born in 1933, Brown was charismatic and controversial performer who earned the title "the hardest working man in show business".

His agent, Super Frank, said that Brown has scratched shows this week but had planned to be back on stage by New Year's Eve at the B.B. King Blues Club.

Frank said Brown was in Atlanta for a dental appointment when his health problems were detected.

Among his many hits that continue to receive airplay are "Papa's Got a Brand New Bag" and "I Got You (I Feel Good)."
