March 25, 2009 Redoubt slows but still lets off steam and ash6th eruption since SundayAlaska's Mount Redoubt volcano has erupted for a sixth time since Sunday evening but is not as severe as the initial eruption. ![]() Officials at the Alaska Volcano Observatory said that Redoubt has erupted again with an ash plume shooting about 15,000 feet high. The eruption shortly after 5 a.m. Wednesday was considered small and brief at 10 minutes. The ash plume appeared to be drifting north to northwest. From National Geograhic:Between Sunday and Monday night, the 10,200-foot (3,100-meter) Redoubt Volcano (also known as Mount Redoubt) erupted six times, sending a volcanic ash cloud 9.5 miles (15 kilometers) into the sky, dusting nearby towns, sparking a swarm of earthquakes, and spurring massive mudflows. Latest information from the Alaska Volcano Observatory2009-03-25 09:24:51 Seismicity has been relatively quiet for the past several hours since a brief explosive event at about 5:12 AKDT this morning. A minor ash plume may have been produced by this event, but it does not appear to have reached more than 15,000 ft above sea level. 2009-03-25 07:39:19 Seismicity has settled back down after the explosion earlier this morning. 2009-03-25 06:30:17 The cloud from the 05:12 AKDT is not visible on radar. It is unlikely that there will be any impact from this event. 2009-03-25 06:07:51 A small explosion occurred at Redoubt volcano at 05:12 AKDT (1312 UTC). The cloud height is estimated to be about 15,000 ft and is drifting north to northwest of the volcano. The event lasted about 10 minutes. 2009-03-25 04:27:27 There has been little change in overall seismic activity over the last several hours. Small discreet events are still occurring. The Aviation Color Code remains at RED, and we are still watching the volcano closely for any sign of renewed explosive activity. © AlaskaReport.com All Rights Reserved. |
