April 21, 2009 Alaska Coast Guard to Receive $7.5 Million from Recovery ActFrom a Senator Mark Begich press release:The Coast Guard in Alaska is in line to receive $7.5 million from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA). The U.S. Department of Homeland Security announced the funding as part of a $240 million investment in a series of Coast Guard projects designed to provide critical improvements and create jobs. ![]() According to Coast Guard officials in Alaska, the $7.5 million will be used to complete a new, 26-unit housing complex for the 50 crew members and their families assigned to the Coast Guard Cutter "Sycamore" in Cordova. "This is a critical time to be supporting the work of the U.S. Coast Guard in Alaska," Sen. Mark Begich said. "This money will help ensure our service men and women have adequate housing so they can focus on the job of maritime safety and security. And an injection of more than $7 million will surely give a huge boost to the economy in and around Cordova." The housing project in Cordova is one of eight shore facility projects receiving ARRA funding, and it's the first Coast Guard project in Alaska funded by the economic recovery package. The new housing units are designed to a LEED for Homes silver standard making them more energy efficient and sustainable. |
