Coast Guard responding to release of 200 gallons of diesel in Seward

From a Coast Guard press release:

The Coast Guard and Shoreside Petroleum are responding to a release of approximately 200 gallons of diesel fuel in the Seward small boat harbor Monday.

Responders have placed 1,000 feet of containment boom in the area and are applying sorbents to the diesel. They have surveyed the shoreline and estimate 95 percent of the diesel is contained within the boom.

Shoreside Petroleum personnel reported the spill from their facility to the Coast Guard around 1 p.m.

The facility maintains sufficient response equipment on site to handle a spill of this size. The source of the spill is reportedly a 1 and 1/2 inch tear in a 4 inch supply line. The cause of the damage is unknown and under investigation.

The road to Seward has been closed at Mile 25 since Friday due to bridge work at mile 25. Transportation officials expect the bridge to reopen today by 5 p.m.

In response to the road closure Coast Guard Sector Anchorage pre-stationed one of their response management petty officers in Seward as a precautionary measure. Additional Coast Guard personnel are en route from Anchorage and will arrive tonight to assist with further clean-up efforts.
