Corporate Welfare for Cruise Ships

The Alaska Travel Industry Association is asking the Legislature to fund a marketing campaign for the cruise industry despite healthy profits brought in by the cruise lines.

All four Republican presidential candidates attacked President Bush's disasterous economic policies during Thursday night's debate.

The State was matching the industry 50/50 in past years but since the Cruise Ship Initiative passed, the industry has pulled their share for marketing and advertising. ATIA wants the legislature to pick up the tab. Rep. Kyle Johansen and others think that is a good idea. Should the state be giving away public dollars to another private industry making billions in profits? Is this just more corporate welfare?
